We’re excited to have booked all of our Little Fox Market dates for the year, starting with Saturday 18th April (check out our Events Page), and we are also doing the Woodoaks Festival in Maple Cross and the Courtlands Residents Association Family Fun Day in Watford the Summer!
Our aim in 2013-2014 was not to be running all over the UK doing markets, but to concentrate on our regular Little Fox, along with a choice few Summer festivals, but even more so this year so as not to over-stretch ourselves as we do need to keep our shelf at Rebel Pebble stocked and exciting, plus we have some other projects in the background (like you do), plus online sales have picked up in the last six months, which is fantastic.
Being at an event is great for getting your name out there and meeting people. (I love chatting to people about skin!) However, a market takes out the entire day, plus the prep time beforehand, which although we really enjoy, can also be exhausting, so we don’t want to be occupied in that way every weekend when we also need to distribute our time amongst making products, the behind the scenes admin and of course coming up with new ideas! I know some business owners who rely solely on markets, so they need to be at everything, and perhaps their production is not as intensive as ours (not always the case!), but as much as we love them, we don’t want markets to be our main thing, if you get my gist.
At the end of last year, we were a bit unsure whether it was financially viable to continue to rent shelf space at Rebel Pebble in Watford, but we have managed to negotiate a better fee, occupying less shelf space, so we are still there!
I’m really pleased, because I want to support the shop as it’s a real gem in a town centre full of chains, plus it’s somewhere creative, fun and different. It reminds me a bit of the Craft Kiln in Charlestown, near St Austell in Cornwall, which sells items made by local people, such as hand painted glass, natural skin care, hand sewn homewares, art pieces and much more, except Rebel Pebble has the added extra of a large downstairs gallery/workshop space. Do pop in and check it out!
I love Autumn. At lunchtime yesterday I popped out for a walk to get away from the office and enjoy the sunshine before Hurricane Gonzalo hits. As I was walking along, crunching my way through the leaves, I noticed the temporary Newington library and sales office for the new Heygate Estate development at Elephant & Castle. The crate-style structures looked very familiar because they are a feature of the Shoreditch Boxpark on which the New Watford Market is based.
On Saturday I visited the market in its new location under the flyover that crosses over the upper high street after popping into Rebel Pebble by the pond to restock and tidy up our shelf. Unfortunately, I didn’t get going very early, so I only got there at about 3.30pm when quite a few stalls were closed, and realised that the grand opening isn’t happening until the end of October.
Back from holiday and time to start making! I’ve been hugely inspired once again by the places I visited in Cornwall, including Newquay, Fowey, Padstow and Mevagissey. The week ended with an amazing outdoor performance of Charles Dickens ‘Great Expectations’ at the cliff side Minack Theatre. “What larks!” Well worth a visit!
So today I am getting started on making bath melts, which we haven’t done for a little while.
These will be available shortly at Rebel Pebble and Little Fox Market in October along with some skin oils and hopefully a body balm for eczema prone skins like mine! 🙂
What have we been doing in August? We always take August off from fairs and things just to regroup, have break and look at product development. At the moment we are working on getting some bigger orders out, but also developing some exciting new products for the autumn, including a skin oil, which will hopefully be on the stall on 4th October. We always have a selection of our products at Rebel Pebble in the Parade, Watford, near the new-look pond, so do pop in and have a look at our shelf. We have also had our space confirmed at the St Clement Danes Christmas Food & Gift fair on 30th November in Chorleywood, which was mega-busy last year. Can’t wait!
